STUDENT STORIES
Hi, my name is Carol Chen, I’m from Shenyang, China. How time flies! I’ve already studied in PNGHS for a half year. During this period, I experienced a different lifestyle, gained a lot of knowledge and also learnt many life skills which I had never learnt before. These all help me grow up and change myself. Firstly, I became more independent, I always took things which my parents did for granted when I was in China, but now I try to cook a table dishes for my grandparents and do housework by myself. My life here seems colorful, on weekends I sometimes hang out with my friends or study in the city library, there are also lots of extra curricular for me to attend, which can enrich part of my free time.
Secondly, compared with China, there are not so much study pressure upon us, what we really need is developing a strong self-learning ability and having a good reading habit. The learning environment here is very different from that in China. The classroom of each period is different. In the class, teacher usually divides the whole class into several parts, so that the students can discuss the problem in the form of groups. It not only can improve our communication skills, but the problem will be solved in the shortest time as well. In addition, some subjects such as chemistry and physics, teachers will always lead us to do some related experiments to help us understand. Undoubtedly, the most confusing subject for me is English. I could only understand about 70% at the beginning, and my English score is only Achieved at that time, after all, teachers here all speak so fast. Gradually, with the help of my teachers, I improved very quickly. Now I can understand around 90%, and the results can be Merit or even Excellence.
Finally, in the past six months, my personality changed a lot, from introverted to outgoing. Similarly, my social skills has a big improvement as well, that is mainly because teachers and classmates here are very kind, they are very willing to help you. Overall, I had a happy and grateful half-year in girls’ high, and I have also gained a lot of things that I cannot obtained in China. Studying in New Zealand has also become an important turning point in my life.
Hi, I'm Christina from China. Studying in New Zealand is a completely different experience from studying in China. At PNGHS, teachers normally give students more logical and critical thinking practices to make their own way of finding the answer. Teachers and students are very willing to help others, they are nice, kind and friendly. They are also very willing to solve any problems you have. Teachers are always happy to explain patiently with each question you get.
Our school has variable choices of subjects which might be interested to you and better for your future plans. You can also join some extensions, arts and sports groups which we have all sort of out of class activities, therefore you have more opportunities to develop your habits and strengths.
Our school has many trips around Palmerston North, which gives students a chance to experience life in New Zealand and a chance to learn more about New Zealand culture and history. There is also another way for students to better fit into kiwi life which is living with a kiwi family. Living with homestays is a chance for students to practice their English and experience lifestyle in New Zealand not just at school, but also with Kiwis that have more social skills. Homestays are always happy to share their stories with you, and also happy to hear about yours.

Kia ora, my name is CJ Fong. I am 18 years old, from Hong Kong and currently studying at Palmerston North Girls’ High School as a Year 13. The subjects I took are Statistics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Photography. My plan is to graduate from PNGHS and study physiotherapy at University. The reason I chose New Zealand to study abroad is to strengthen my English skills by living in an English speaking environment.
New Zealand is a safe country and Palmerston North is known as the “City of Education” Not only there are top scoring high schools but also Massey University, Palmerston North. In PNGHS, academics are as important as participating in school activities in areas such as sports and music. The school provides a variety of activities, from Inter-house competitions to International Cultural Exchange. Everyone will be able to find their place or even new interests studying in PNGHS.
In addition, studying aboard is never a piece of cake. It requires independence of your own since you will be away from your friends, family, or even your favorite pet at home. However, I guarantee if you’re brave enough to step out of your comfort zone. Everything will then be worth it, you will make new friends and able to see the world in other angles.
Studying at PNGHS is convenient, you can walk from school to town within 10 mins. Moreover Palmerston North makes sight-seeing easier since there are great transports and an airport. During my study in New Zealand, I traveled to Auckland, Napier, Wellington and also the South Island with my friends. The landscapes are breathtaking and lots of awesome memories were made. Therefore, I would highly recommend you to come along and experience a study aboard life at PNGHS.
Kia Ora,
Kia Ora I’m Kathi from Germany. I’m here for 8 months but of the 8 months are 5 months already over. My reasons to go to New Zealand were to play hockey and improve my English. Hockey makes really much fun. We have a good team and compete against adults. The best things are the exchanges. You play against other Schools and maybe like I did you play against your friends from other schools. The people here are awesome. I really like my friends and enjoy everyday I go to school.
I am Lydia and I am from Germany. I chose PNGHS because of the hockey team which plays on a very high level and I enjoy playing with them. At the moment we have games almost every weekend and also exchanges with other schools from Napier, Wellington and New Plymouth.
When I came here I had to wear a school uniform for the first time in my life and to be honest I wasn’t very enthusiastic about that. But now I think it is great. You don’t need much time in the morning and more importantly, you make good friends because nobody judges you on the way you look. The girls are very nice and try to help, just like the teachers, if you have any problems.
Kia Ora, my name is Charlotte Herzberg. I studied at Palmerston North Girls High School for one year as a Year 12 student. I liked studying at a girls-only school because they were really supportive and had a strong school community. In my first days at school, I initially felt anxious about making friends, but my assigned buddy, Linn, eased my worries by introducing me to her friend group, making me feel welcome.
Year 12 in New Zealand involves studying six subjects; I chose English, English Language Learning, Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and Physical Education. Despite initially struggling to keep up in the English class, I adapted and excelled in essay writing by the end of the year. The sciences posed challenges due to the use of scientific language in English, but with support, I achieved excellence in Chemistry. Mathematics became a comfortable space for me, and I participated in a regional Maths competition, in which my team finished 4th place. Physical Education offered a glimpse into the active and diverse sports culture, including playing rugby and writing essays on sports theory.
Beyond academics, I actively engaged in sports, participating in triathlons, cycling races, and cross-country events, earning accolades and overcoming a setback when I broke my ankle. The supportive community at Palmerston North Girls High School and the unique exam system, with both internal and external assessments, contributed to a positive academic experience.
Hi, I'm going to talk about my school life and my NZ life. I like to talk with my friends at lunch time. My friends are very kind and if I need help, they are there for me. I belong to two dance crews and I enjoy practicing dance after school. Also I joined the badminton team as well with my friends and ply once a week. Our school teachers help me a lot and especially my host mother and I enjoy a conversation every day at home. On weekend we enjoy art work and baking cakes. Therefore, I'm enjoying my school and NZ life. Thanks.
Hello. I'm Sumi Sasaki.I'm from Tokyo. I'm senior 2 in Japan but I'm Year 11 in here. I'll stay here for 10 months. My homestay life and school life are good. The environment at school is really international. We can make friends not only local students but also students from all over the world. And I could make some Kiwi friends and friends from the other countries. They make my school life more interesting. I sometimes feel the culture shock. That's really good for me because I cannot experience in Japan. At first, I felt confused about something new like class times and so on but I tried to ask my friends and teachers and they taught me. The time passed really fast in here. That's because my school life and homestay life goes well. From now on, I'll try to find another new things and difference of culture and I want my New Zealand life to be better and better.
Kia Ora, I'm Nao from Japan. I stayed at PNGHS for 8 months as a Year 11 student. I really enjoyed my time at PNGHS. I loved the school and the homestay. The teachers and friends are kind and always help me. My buddy especially helped me adjust to school life and make friends. We are best friends, and I enjoyed talking to her and my friends. My homestay family was also great. They welcomed me warmly and helped me understand other ways of life. They took me to many places in New Zealand, and I experienced many kinds of activities.
It takes courage to come here without friends and family. However, I’m grateful for this opportunity to experience a more exciting world with different perspectives and become more independent, which will prepare and equip me for my future. I highly recommend PNGHS to study abroad.
I have experienced lots of new things at Palmerston North Girls' High School that I would not be able to experience in Korea. Life in New Zealand is very different from life in my country. First of all, the school usually finish at 3.20 except Wednesday (finish at 2.30) yay! so we can chill out afterwards which I found very good. There are various subjects at PNGHS and students get to choose the subjects that they are interested in. Students are so into their study and work, to ask questions and focus on their class and I became one of them. What I like most about PNGHS is, we can join many groups we would like to. I am connected to different groups; a couple of choirs, string orchestra, concert band, badminton, some extensions and one of committees. As a music lover, it is a really good chance to improve my skills by joining some groups and rehearsing together with good teachers. There are four or more high-performance groups that we have to audition for and I am in two of them for a higher achievement in music. I am not that interested in sports so I did not join any groups except badminton, but there are lots of sports groups that are fun. These groups including extensions and committee help me make more friends who have similar interests to me. Making new friends from different countries is very helpful to learn about different cultures and languages. I have learned not only English but also other languages from my friends and some language extensions.
Hello, my name is Jenny and I’m from South Korea. I came here about two years ago and I’m year 12 now. The time spent in Palmerston North Girls’ High School was a very good experience. The first thing I felt when I arrived in New Zealand was that the air was very clear. People are living with nature, breathing fresh air, and enjoying the warm sunshine. On the weekends, I like to take a walk before studying because it makes me relax and helps me to concentrate on studying. What made I surprised when I first saw PNGHS was the scale of the school. There are many buildings and a large grassy area. All buildings are used for individual subjects so that teachers can get equipment easily and students can focus on that subject. Because the buildings are separated from each other, when students move to another classroom, they can breathe fresh water to refresh and have a little bit of exercise. In PNGHS, there are a variety of subjects not only English, Mathematics, Science but also History, Visual Art, Music, Dance, Food and nutrition, and students can choose different subjects depending on their interest. I like our school library since there are lots of books for various genres, and some books are related to studying so that you can gain more information about your learning from the book. The library is big and pleasant, so it is good to stay at the library after school and study in a quiet environment. Also, PNGHS has an online library (ebook) which is very useful If there is no paper copy of the book that you want to read, then you can use the online library and it is free. The biggest reason why I like the school library is, because of tutoring. On every Wednesday, students are welcome to come to the library after school and attend tutoring. Senior students are happy to help and all students are free to go. I really enjoy being a PNGHS student, and I suggest you, who are thinking to go overseas, to come to PNGHS.
Hello, my name is Kelly Park and I am Park Sunghyun in Korea. I am 14 years old and I’m in year 10. I am very satisfied with my school life in New Zealand. Because I can improve my English skills. You can learn real English by practicing speaking and listening differently than you do in Korea. And like swimming, you can learn new and diverse sports that you can't experience in Korean schools. Honestly, I am more satisfied than my school life in Korea.
My name is Tonnam Somsueb. I am 16 years old and currently studying at Palmerston North Girl’s high school as a Year 12 student. I’ve been studying in PNGHS since Year 9, and from my experience here in NZ I realised that it’s much more relaxed and chill. In our school, we support students both academically and also physically. Students can play sports after school both summer and winter season, as well as extension groups and committee group for students to take interests. Subjects at schools are also much more variety and students have a choice to choose according to their own interests. When I first came to NZ, everything was all new to me. I felt unfamiliar with the places as it was so different from where I came from. Bangkok was loud and over populated. Streets are filled with cars and traffic jams. But in Palmy, is was quiet and not that crowded. Which that is what I like about Palmy as I think it helps me to concentrate on my learning. The education in NZ is really straight forward and easy to follow, making the students don’t stressed themselves up when preparing for exams or assessments.
Before coming to New Zealand, I was a shy person who often hesitated before trying something new. I never liked to spend time with the crowd and rather be in my comfort zone. When I first came to New Zealand, I met students from all around the world. To adapt into the new environment, I threw myself into school activities, extensions (clubs), and volunteering. PNGHS has exposed me to the diversity within the community such as the multicultural committee. This enabled me to obtain new experiences and gained heaps of connections. After that, I became more open to participating in school activities and gradually stepping out of my comfort zone. The school encouraged students to ask questions and find solutions on their own with the support of teachers in class and also out-of-class time. This way of studying is very different from what I have experienced in Thailand school. The PNGHS study environment is very friendly and chill. Having more independence in study and freedom to express thoughts boosts my confidence and self-esteem. I am immensely grateful for these experiences that have shaped me into a more confident and open-minded individual, ready to face the world ahead.
I was granted this opportunity by PNGHS and it has brought many wonderful things to me including the most caring teachers, the best group of friends along with an amazing studying environment. I love the fact that I could choose which subject I want to study instead of learning compulsory subjects set by the school. This gives me the chance to explore what I like and have a sense of what I want to be later on in life. It also gives me a chance to befriend with other people instead of sticking to a certain group of friends for the whole day. My homestay mother is an amazing person, she has helped me to adapt into a Kiwi’s life and made sure that my transition to a new country became smooth and less stressful. The studying environment here is honestly amazing, the school is enormous and the facilities are at top conditions. My experience here has been amazing so far and I absolutely love it here. This school year has been amazing so far and I am tremendously grateful to be given an opportunity to attend PNGHS.
For me, a Vietnamese student who has been studying in New Zealand, particularly Palmerston North Girls’ High School for almost a year, I would say that the key difference between the two countries’ education lies in that: while Vietnam is hard on academic knowledge; New Zealand’s curriculum might seem easier but actually is more practical, teaches more skills that would be useful in university and future jobs. Moreover, since it is not so demanding that a student has to learn every subject and know everything, New Zealand education is more personalized for each student, thereby boosting their capacity to the highest. At Girls’ High, one takes maximum five to seven subjects depending on year level, in which they can choose more the higher year they are in, specializing on their dream career. For example, I am in year 11, so I have only three compulsory subjects and can choose the rest (three). The optional subjects vary across a range of fields: at Girls’ High, there are social studies, languages, arts, music, computer subjects, health, etc. The school also has a system of Semper Sursum which encourages students to participate in extra-curriculum and social activities: sports, extensions (clubs), committees, etc. This gives each individual student development in all aspects they like, a balance of academic study, soft skills and health, and also sense of independence and social responsibilities. Furthermore, New Zealanders are friendly and do not judge others generally; specifically, Girls’ High community is multicultural, therefore here is a perfect environment for one to express themselves and live to the fullest.
